Water Treatment Design
Watson Well has been designing, installing and maintaining Water Treatment Systems for years. Our Water Treatment Systems are designed to deliver pure safe and refreshing drinking water from groundwater wells, springs, ponds, creeks or other water sources.
State Certified Labs
At Watson, Water Treatment begins with a State Certified Lab Test to determine if there are any bacteria’s present in the water source. At the same time, we test for various minerals and heavy metals common to our region which can also affect the quality of your water as it relates to human consumption and plant health. After carefully reviewing the results of the lab tests, we begin designing a water filtration system that will address all the specific water quality issues of the client. State Certified Lab Tests also provide us with a benchmark of the client’s water quality for comparison, in case something changes with the water being delivered from the well in the future.
A Water Softener will efficiently remove Hard Water Minerals which in time causes significant damage to the inside of pipes and to many of the newer household appliances. Hard Water is also the cause of calcium build up on faucets, shower heads, and inside toilet bowls and is responsible for hard water spots on shower doors, glasses and table utensils. We have a line of Water Softeners that will meter the volume of water being used before sending the unit into a regeneration or backwash. Metered Softeners provide significant savings on the amount of softener salt being used. If sodium is a concern for human health or plant life, we have bags of potassium that can be used to regenerate the system instead of water softener salt. We also have a combination water softener that will remove chlorine from city water and at the same time soften the water.
Another common water problem is high or low pH (basic or acidic). We like to see a neutral range between 7.0 and 8.5 pH for domestic drinking water. Farmers typically want to see pH ranges of 6.0 – 6.7.
pH is an important factor in the treatment of minerals. Higher levels of pH will assist in the precipitation of minerals and some metals. Very low levels of pH or acidic water can be very damaging if the home is plumbed with copper. One indicator of this problem would be a blueish/turquoise discharge on shower tiles, toilet reservoirs etc. The chemical reaction between the acidic water and the copper will result in the deterioration of the pipes. Without proper treatment, copper pipes will develop pinholes causing leaks. In severe conditions, water in the pipes can contain levels of copper and may be ingested through drinking the water.
When pH levels are Basic or Alkaline, we can choose from a couple of different chemicals that would be injected into the water to bring the pH levels back to neutral.
Bacteria Elimination with Ozone
Bacteria present in water can be discovered and analyzed using a State Certified Lab. If bacteria are present in the water and a proper shocking or disinfection of the water source (well) and all distribution lines is not able to eliminate the ongoing presence of bacteria, a disinfection system will be designed based on how severe the bacteria problem is. Bacteria treatment systems can utilize chlorine in conjunction with properly sized contact tank(s) which will provide proper exposure time between the bacteria and the chlorine. A Carbon filter is used at the end of this process to remove all traces of chlorine from the finished water. Another method of treating bacteria is Ultraviolet Light (UV). When utilizing UV in water disinfection, it is essential that a very effective pre-treatment system is in place to remove any minerals or solids in the water, so the bacteria will stay indirect exposure to the UV light as it passes through the lamp chamber and killed. If pre-treatment is insufficient, the bacteria can shadow the mineral while passing through the lamp chamber entering the domestic water supply untreated. Our Ozone Treatment System is our most effective way to disinfect water. Ozone is a powerful germicidal agent. In water, it is 350 times more powerful than chlorine and 3000 times faster in killing total coliform bacteria’s which includes E.coli, as well as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, parasites, virus, fungi, molds and other microbes found in water.
Ozone Treatment for Minerals & Heavy Metals
Watson utilizes different filtering techniques depending on how much mineral and harmful metals are in the water. For lower levels of Iron and Manganese, we may install a small automated mineral filter which includes a small Ozone Generator that injects Ozone into the filter during the backwashing cycles regenerating the filter media and at the same time disinfecting inside the filter and backwash valve.
When Home Owners, Farmers, or Wine Makers encounter large amounts of Arsenic, Boron, Iron, Manganese, or even Rotten Egg Smells in their water, the need for pure, clean water is essential. We will install one of our Ozone Water Treatment Systems that will filter all the contaminants listed above and more – if there is E.coli or other types of Bacteria’s present in the same water, our Ozone Treatment System will kill it on contact during the filtering process without the need for UV Disinfection systems.

Tannin Removal with Ozone
Watson has built many surface water systems over the years. Our surface water systems will include strong filtration and disinfection. A common water problem on the North Coast of California is that the source water has a discoloration that looks like tea or is tannish in color resulting in bath water or toilet bowels having a continuous objectional discoloration. This mineral stays in solution and cannot be filtered with conventional filters. This mineral is called Tannin.
Tannins are a natural organic material that can be the byproduct of nature’s fermentation process, its created as water passes through peaty soil and decaying vegetation. This can cause water to have a faint yellow to tea-like color and can cause yellow staining on fabrics, fixtures, China, and laundry. Tannins may give a tangy or tart aftertaste to water. They may also cause water to have a musty or earthy odor. Tannins – also known as fulvic or humic acid – are more common in surface water supplies and shallow wells than in deep wells. Water in marshy, low-lying, or coastal areas are also more susceptible to tannins.
In the photos below, Tannin water was captured from a creek source and processed through our Ozone Treatment System. The intense levels of ozone oxidized and precipitated out the Tannin, capturing it in a special filter media as illustrated in the photos below. In addition, our Ozone System will oxidize and filter all the remaining minerals and solids and kill any Bacteria present from the surface water supply.
